Non Profit Technology Conference 2010 -> Insomnia-induced, Inspiration-overloaded insights
5:36am.
My friends Sarah and Ehon are fast asleep.
And I am buzzing with epiphanies.Here are a collection of organic, reflective insights that are emerging in my consciousness post Non Profit Technology Conference 2010. It is interesting that even though this was a technology conference, my takeaways - for the most part - have not been about the tech itself. In particular order of significant, here are a few things on my mind.1. Meaningful conversation is more valuable than information. Information can be accessed anytime. Meaningful conversation cannot.2. Character and connection is more important than rep' and achievement 3. Meaning - within yourself and work - is vital4. There are dots everywhere. Amazing dots. The problem is these dots haven't been connected. We have to connect more dots. We create more meaningful, sustainable impact when the lines between dots can be seen. 5. We need Attention Philanthropy.6. It ain't abou technology or tools. It is just adapting to human evolution.7. Ideas emerge at the cross-section of other great ideas. Everything is built on something before you. 8. We need storytellers. Stories move us. Stories are a catalyst for change.9. Your challenges are part of your journey. Overcoming them gives you a depth of understanding that success cannot. There is no failure - only learning. 10. People are inherently good. They want to good. Give them the platform to do good.11. The Digital Piligrims is happening. It exists. Just a matter of opening up the conversation around it. Building a movement around it' 12. The world is awesome. The problem is the awesome cannot be seen by the majority. We need to share this awesomeness.13. Behind everything, there is an essential essence. Taoist call it 'The Way". Words cannot really do it justice. Once you understand this essence, you will see patterns. It is an opportunity to see innovation. 14. Listen. Stop Talking. Listen15. With increased complexity, simplicity becomes the key.16. Awesome is not some bullshit colloquism term - it is the value that creates powerful organisations. 17. Create your own words to create your reality. Understand its epistemology. Or just make up your own to fit with you.18. You can't quantify everything. You can't measure life. Metrics are everything. You just do it. 19. Do. Take Action. Create. Make. Ideas are nothing unless shared or created. 20. Changemakers, move beyond the hero myth. Don't get trapped. The real heros go beyond it and realise it about changing the world and not by perpertuating yourself as some kind of fucking martymr 21. The world is incredibly inspring. There is so much good. We need to share. That is why open data is so amazing.22. We use metaphors and analogies for a reason. They are part of the same reality we exist in. It ain't just literalistic and rhetorical masturbation. They shape our reality. And how we innovate. Wisdom is all around us if you just look. 23. Live your truth. Don't just talk about it.24. Fuck 'em. 25. Serendipity is real. Not just a hippie thing. Trusting and looking for serependity leads to big things.26. We need to create more physical spaces that instigate, promote and see 'flow' 27. Collective consciousness is happening right now. Bladerunner is ancient history. We are miles ahead of that.28. Trust is everything. The new scarce commodity in our post-industrial age. Create real trust. It is the first thing to get big things to happen. You cannot do anything alone. 29. Feel and experience truth. 30. Let go. Let the chaos do its thing. Order with emerge on its own terms.31. Leadership and Fellowship are part of the same coin. Embrace both.32. Care. Learn. Help. Reflect. Listen. Give. Share. Connect. Create. The Market economy does not reward these things very easily. But it will. Soon enough. 33. Everything I wrote above could be rubbish. But, you know what, that is the great thing. Let go of the attachment of your words. Trial your words. Live your words. See if it works. After all, life is merely perpetual beta. Agile development is not just a tech thing. It is a way of living life.
